Welcome to the Social Pulpit. This blog has a dual purpose.
1. To create a forum for discussion about social advocacy and the role that social media is playing in the evolving relationship between citizens and their government.
I first used the phrase to describe the Obama campaign’s use of social media. You can find the white paper on the subject – The Social Pulpit: Barack Obama’s Social Media Toolkit – on the Edelman Insights Web site (pdf).
2. It is the home for the Johns Hopkins University Intro to the Digital Age class, where we will be discussing trends in social media and learning about the tools and platforms that are driving conversations online and off.
Although the class isn’t excplicitly about politics, the success of Obama’s social media program serves as an ideal vehicle for thinking about the digital age, from the basics, to the most sophisticated. I was developing the curriculum at the same time that I was writing a white paper on the Obama campaign, so they are juxtaposed in my mind.
